How should social care be run and funded?

Posted on behalf of Centre4

PM Boris Johnson, on the steps of Downing Street: “My job is to protect you, or your parents or grandparents, from the fear of having to sell your home to pay for the costs of care and so I am announcing now on the steps of Downing Street that we will fix the crisis in social care once and for all with a clear plan we have prepared to give every older person the dignity and security they deserve.” July 24th 2019

The future of social care affects everyone, sooner or later. Everyone agrees it’s in crisis but government has found it difficult, so far, to produce any proposals for fixing it. It’s time for the people’s voice to be heard. This event is one of many around the country involving service users, carers and professionals run by Talk Shop in partnership with local organisations such as Centre4 Grimsby. The outcomes will be reported to the House of Commons Health and Social Care Select Committee.

Instead of the traditional for and against debate, that often leaves everyone angry and frustrated, Talk Shop offers a discussion format that puts the emphasis on understanding each other's opinions and finding common ground. A tall order in two or three hours, but we promise you won't be bored.

Informed Choices - Democratic Community Education in Grimsby

Posted on behalf of Billy Dasein

Come along and join us in furthering this project to bring high level community education to Grimsby.

'Informed Choices' is a developing programme of democratic political education on Grimsby’s East Marsh. The project is a collaboration between East Marsh United (eastmarshunited.org), Worker's Education Association (WEA) and Cooperative College and has ties with Talkshop and the funded Place Based Social Action project to develop an East Marsh Assembly (pbsa.home.blog) and other democratic participatory infrastructure models. A new branch of the WEA is to be set up, to be known as the East Marsh Community Education Branch. The idea behind the project is to build an imaginative, user-friendly framework for community education for social value in line with, for example, Rogers’ person-centred education and Freire’s dialogic education. Wherever possible, the curriculum will be actualized in all cases by the community learners and will be based on the framework in the diagram, “Informed Choices 3-Year Programme”. It is anticipated that this will lead to a joint WEA/Cooperative University Certificate, as well as feeding into the Cooperative University degree structure.

This meeting is an important waymarker, as we are formally begin the process of setting up the first new branch of the WEA for some time (as far as I am aware!) - we will also be planning a number of regular public events to promote dialogue in any or all subjects that merit further exploration of our world - education, housing, drug policy, co-operativism (we're in the process of becoming a coop), local democracy, policing - come along and help frame how this works as it's an empty page right now!

To get a sense of some of the educational philosophy behind the project, have a listen to this podcast discussing the relevance of Brazilian educator, Paolo Freire, to adult education: https://is.gd/C27sZS

If you know somebody who might be passionate about our project, please pass the link forward and encourage to sign up.
